Everyday Gifts

It’s times like these that remind us how lucky we are during normal times to be able to do things like travel, go the beach, hang out with friends, take kids to playgrounds… my family and I are getting restless, as I am sure many of you are too. We are trying our best to be grateful for what we have (our health, our jobs, our home), but some days, it’s really hard not to complain a little.

It is within this context that I’d like to share a tale of everyday gifts:

Obi loves books and he especially enjoys pulling books out of our lower book shelves. The other day, he pulled out The Country of the Blind and Other Science-Fiction Storiesby H.G. Wells, a book that my husband bought years ago. I was very intrigued because I haven’t read H.G. Wells in ages but I very much enjoyed his classic novella, The Time Machine. Inside the book was a bookmark with this quote:

When each day is the same as the next, it’s because people fail to recognize the good things that happen in their lives every day that the sun rises.
— Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist

I was amazed by how many gifts I was receiving from Obi’s book exploration.

  1. The H.G. Wells book - I didn’t even know that my husband owned this book and that it’s been in our home this whole time! I am so looking forward to reading it.

  2. Paulo Coelho - Coelho was one of my favorite authors as a teenager, and I haven’t read his books in a long time. I love that this little bookmark has reconnected me to his work.

  3. The quote in the bookmark - what a beautiful, gentle reminder for me to recognize everyday gifts, to really enjoy the time I have with my family instead of focusing on feeling stuck inside the house.

  4. The fact that I can share the above three gifts with you, my readers!

If you are having a difficult time right now, I invite you to join me in the search for everyday gifts. Let’s find joy and beauty in the everyday, and try to stay positive together! Is there a recent gift you received and would like to share? I’d love to hear about it. To read more of my writing on gifts, click here, here and here.
