She started us out with drawing exercises that freed up the inner critic and opened up the world of wonder, the wonder that comes with really looking at what you are going to draw and paint. A process that now has me “hooked”. She gave plenty of instruction and personal attention as we picked up our brushes and began to paint. By the end of the day I knew this was just a beginning. Which of course speaks volumes and is more about the teacher than the student🤪. Her workshop opened up a brand new world to me, one that is Pretty Special! Janet is a very talented watercolor teacher! She demonstrated her technique by painting a beautiful piece in real time while giving tips on page composition, creating visual interest, applying color, and more. Her class was dynamic and engaging, offering helpful advice on drawing and practicing two different watercolor techniques. She provided meaningful feedback on our work and taught us to view our pieces with eyes of beauty and appreciation. Janet is not only an excellent watercolorist, but she’s also a great human and stellar teacher, especially for someone like me who was completely new to painting. I attended the 2025 Bali surf/painting retreat, and it was beyond special and much more meaningful than just learning to paint and improving how to surf. Janet provided the most beautiful accommodations and set the right tone for the entire retreat - relaxed while encouraging us to be reflective in exploring our creative selves and connections with others and our environment. I told myself before the retreat that I was really just going for the surf, but I’m so happy with how misguided I was. Yes, the surf was amazing, but the retreat was so much more. It allowed me to tap into my inner artist, which I thought was nonexistent, in a space that encouraged deep reflection. Whether you’re a new or experienced surfer or artist or just want to be around someone who will bring something special out of you, I wouldn’t hesitate to sign up for one of Janet’s future workshops or retreats.
